Green initiatives offer Huaxi great development potential

The Huaxi district of Guiyang – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – has prioritized its environmental protection and in recent years has successfully explored a green development path with local characteristics.

Huaxi has carried out measures to monitor the water quality of centralized drinking water sources, to ensure the safety of its drinking water, and has improved the quality of the water environment in the district. 

Over the past three years, the water quality compliance rate of urban drinking water sources and the environmental quality compliance rate of surface water in Huaxi have both reached 100 percent.

To improve the local air quality, the district has carried out urban dust control, treatment and control of catering oil fumes, industrial waste gases and motor vehicle exhausts, and promoted low-carbon and eco-friendly transportation. Since the start of the year, the proportion of the days with excellent and good ambient air quality rate has reached 100 percent.

As for soil pollution control, Huaxi has established a soil pollution monitoring system and controlled pollution from agricultural production – especially the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides – and ensured the safe use of contaminated plots.

The district has ramped up the prevention and control of solid waste and heavy metal pollution, with the comprehensive utilization rate of industrial solid waste and the safe disposal rate of hazardous waste reaching 100 percent.

Using different platforms, Huaxi has unblocked public complaints and supervision channels and solved environmental problems that the public is concerned about in a timely manner.

Over the past three years, the district has investigated and dealt with more than 1,000 calls and visits concerning environmental pollution.

It has organized on-site and online ecological and environmental protection publicity activities, and promoted a low-carbon, eco-friendly and healthy lifestyle to the public. 

In terms of the industrial sector, Huaxi has been accelerating the development of a green high-end industrial system and even got a number of environmental protection companies to support local economic development. 

Relying on its environmental charms, the district has promoted the reputation of major tourist attractions and incubated more tourism projects themed around health care, rural leisure and study tours – bringing vitality to the local eco-friendly oriented economy.
