Tourists to the Shizijie area of Huaxi district in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, have been impressed by its modern commercial pedestrian streets and artistic alleyways.
The community in the traditional core business area of Huaxi used to have haphazard buildings and aging facilities. However, in June 2021, the new-type urbanization demonstration project of the Shizijie area began to give the area a new look.

"Before the reconstruction, Shizijie area carried out the top-level design of two functional divisions, three themed blocks, nine themed alleys, and 12 groups of communities," said Zhang Xingwei, an official of Huaxi's government office.
"The northern area will focus on the industrialization of tourism, while the southern will emphasize new-type urbanization."

Under this framework, Shizijie rebuilt pipelines, corridors, and walls inside and outside buildings, demolished illegal structures, added convenient facilities and green landscapes, and improved the diversion pipeline system for rain and sewage. A total of 30 backstreets were renovated as well.
Community day care centers for senior residents and comprehensive cultural service centers were also built.
To boost local tourism, Shizijie upgraded tourism and commercial facilities by building a bridge connecting with Huaxi Park, preserving time-honored shops, introducing popular modern shops, and developing nine different themed alleys.
On April 29, Shizi Street in the area reopened after preliminary renovation, attracting crowds of visitors.
"Next, a planned catering and commercial complex, a fashion commercial complex and a smart parking complex will start construction," Zhang added.
