Huaxi district in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has made every effort to eliminate poverty in recent years which has met with great success.
From 2013 to 2019, the district's gross domestic product (GDP) increased from 27.52 billion yuan ($4.18 billion) to 60.58 billion yuan, an increase of 120.16 percent. The total fiscal revenue increased from 4.18 billion yuan to 11.04 billion yuan, an increase of 164.27 percent.

During the period, the district invested 172.97 million yuan of funds in special poverty alleviation projects at all levels. All nine impoverished villages in the district were lifted out of penury, benefitting 774 households with 2,145 people. As a result, the incidence of poverty dropped to 0.3 percent.
Since 2012, Huaxi has financially supported 143,728 students at all levels, distributing 74.3 million yuan in subsidies and grants.
A total of 787.75 million yuan was invested to build, renovate and expand 36 township and town schools, provide adequate facilities for 57 rural primary and secondary schools, and supplement 1,466 teachers at all levels and types of schools in the district.
The district also actively improved the rural living environment, completing 178 rural drinking water safety projects which supplied 183,981 locals.
Huaxi also completed restructuring 92,000 mu (6,133 hectares) of agricultural land to industrial use, built two dam areas covering over 500 mu each and four high-efficiency agricultural parks.
In the meantime, the cultivation of vegetables has steadily grown to now covers 205,000 mu, while the land given over to the cultivation of fine fruit covers 59,500 mu.
In terms of poverty alleviation assistance, the district implemented major measures related to a market expansion project, employment promotion, industrial quality improvement, education assistance, medical assistance and talent assistance.
Since 2016, Huaxi has invested 32.3 million yuan in integration funds, covering 20,880 poor people in assisted areas, to help get them out of poverty.
