Updated: 2020-04-24

Relying on an industry upgrade as well as local cultivation, Jiuan village in Huaxi district, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has achieved the environmentally friendly development of its tea trees.

Jiuan village was once the wealthiest village in Huaxi district, with a history of coal mining stretching back over a hundred years. During the heyday of the coal industry, more than 80 percent of the village's financial revenue came from coal production.

However, since October 2014, Jiu'an village has vigorously developed its tea industry and explored a new development path towards the integration of tea, culture and tourism.

Through years of efforts, the locals have participated in the successful creation and development of the tea industry. Transforming the former coal hills into tea-producing hills, miners have become tea farmers and the tea areas have become scenic spots.

Guizhou Gui Tea Co built a top-quality tea producer with a plantation covering 1,444 hectares in the village, by introducing three advanced tea processing production lines for a total investment of 947 million yuan ($133.69 million).

At present, the quality of tea being produced there has passed the inspection of 463 quality indicators from the European Union and is exported to 10 countries and regions including Germany, the United States, France and Canada.

Huaxi district now has 12 tea processing companies and a leading national company.

The district next plans to improve its overall quality and efficiency and allow more farmers participate in the advancement of Huaxi's tea industry, making tea products a leading product for its agricultural development.
